Bernard McClain, c. 1926

This page of Mom’s album has a couple of fun photos of Uncle Barney.

Mom’s caption for the first photo is “Bernard with his cart and horse.” Unfortunately, Mom put the cart before the horse. (Sorry, I just couldn’t resist.)

Uncle Barney is closest to the camera, holding the reins. Mom didn’t say who his two passengers are. One guess (and it’s just a guess) is that they are Billy (left) and Pat Hutchins (Aunt Bessie’s sons). The ages seem about right.

Mom’s caption on the second photo is just “Bernard.” It seems like there must be a story behind this photo. What is Uncle Barney sitting on? It appears to be a pile of vegetation, but for what purpose?

Something seems to have gone wrong when this photo was printed, causing the background to be washed out and creating a short of halo around Uncle Barney. Still, it’s a great photo of him.
