Florence McClain, Student Nurse, c. 1929

Several photos of Mom (Florence McClain) as a student nurse have appeared here before. Here are a couple more.

Mom on campus at Good Samaritan Hospital, Portland, about 1929.
Grainy photo of Mom in her student nurse uniform, taken on the farm in Tallman. Judging from the corn field behind her, it is late summer or early fall. Perhaps this was taken as she was about to leave for her second year of nurse’s training, 1929.

Both of these photos show a uniform dress that appears quite stiff and “billowy” (for lack of a better word). It looks almost as if the dresses were designed to be filled with helium, so the nurses could float around the hospital on their rounds. ;–)
