This is another photo cropped and glued to the “Pictures” sheet of paper tucked into the front of Mom’s photo album. Like the others on that sheet, it is a bit beat up (and in this case, also quite faded). This is Arthur and Addie McClain, their children, and Sarah Hammell beside the McClain’s house in Tallman, Oregon. (Note that the McClain’s house is out of the cropped frame on the left. The house behind them is a neighbor’s house.) Probably the photo was taken by John Hammell.
This photo has a notation that looks maybe like “14” beside it, which I take to be Mom’s age here, making the year 1924 or early 1925. This looks about right from the apparent ages of the other children. In 1924 Uncle Barney turned 12 and Aunt Betty turned 7. While we’re on ages, Grandpa McClain turned 40 that year and Grandma McClain turned 38. Great-Grandma Hammell turned 62. The McClains had been living in Tallman for about six years at this time.
Note: If you look closely here or click on the photo to view the larger version, you will see what appears to be a bit of scribbling on Grandpa’s face and on the side of Uncle Barney’s face. If that’s what it is, I don’t know why it was done. This is a very small area, so it probably wasn’t done by a small child as one might otherwise suspect.
Addendum
Susan Humphrey kindly provided a low resolution scan of this photo without cropping. This is helpful to get perspective on where the photo was taken in relation to the house (which is on the left). The person standing by the house is Alma Grugett. Aunt Betty’s estimate on the year of this photo is “1923?” (as Susan mentioned in the comment), which I think is close enough to what I had that I’ll leave it as it is.
