McClain Children and Neighbors, c. 1921

Here is another group photo of McClain children with Tallman neighbors. I’m guessing this was taken about 1921.

Names and ages in 1921 (from left, back row then front): Alma Grugett, 7, Florence McClain, 11, Benetta Swink?, 12?, Albert Grugett, 5, Bernard McClain, 9, Betty McClain, 4.

Alma Grugett, her younger brother Albert, older brother Sidney (he was the same age as Florence) and mother Beulah lived with Larkin and Alice Trulove in Tallman. Beulah seems to have been the widow of Alice’s late brother Albert. Also in the household were Larkin and Alice’s daughters, Bessie and Addie (yes, really), ages 31 and 26 respectively. Bessie is listed as a teacher in 1920, but without occupation in 1930. By the 1930 census, Beulah Grugett and the children had moved from Tallman into Lebanon.

Since I’ve given you this background on the Grugetts, I’ll go ahead and post a photo of the three children from the next page of Mom’s album. I imagine this was taken about 1921 also.

Mom’s caption on the first photo above gives the name “Benetta” for the person in back on the right. The only Benetta I could find near Tallman (in fact, the only “Benetta” in the entire state of Oregon in 1920 that had been born after 1900) was a Benetta Swink in the Tennessee area (just north of Lebanon, so not far from Tallman). Benetta Swink was a year older than Florence. Whether that is the Benetta in the photo above, I can’t be sure, but it seems likely.
