Second Ascent of Snow Peak, 1933

Here is the page of Dad’s photo album covering his second ascent of Snow Peak, February 13, 1933 (just in case you were wondering why the previous page covered only the first and third ascents). The second ascent (attempted ascent) was not successful. Given the conditions, that is hardly surprising. I don’t know what possessed him to try to climb the peak in February, in the snow. (They don’t call it “Snow Peak” for nothing.) I don’t know the names of the individuals who joined him in this. (If you do, please speak up.)

Just looking at these photos makes me cold. (Although truth be told the air probably wasn’t that cold, judging from the way they have their coats open and nothing covering their faces or ears. Below freezing, no doubt, but not way, way below freezing.)

Looks like they had a rifle with them. (Stuck in the snow above, being held by the guy on the right below.) I don’t know if that gives any clue as to why they were up there in February—whether there was something they could have been hunting that time of year.

Evidently they were wearing snowshoes, at least. You may think that goes without saying in these conditions. But if you think that, you didn’t know my father. At times, he could be pretty doggedly determined to do something the hard way, just to see if it could be done. Come to think of it, maybe that’s why he tried to climb Snow Peak in February, in the snow. ;–)

  1. I love your description of our father. Annie would tell you that I am just as bad, if not worse!
