Minnie Wright, Son, and Anna, Summer 1929

Dad evidently took this photo. A notation on the back simply reads “Summer 1929.” No indication as to the circumstances or location.

That is Minnie (Grandma) Wright in the middle, reading what appears to be a newspaper. But why is she reading a newspaper there, seated on a stony slope? The boy on the left tying a shoelace could be John or Lee. I’m not sure enough to say which. I’m reasonably sure that is Anna on the right, walking through the scene in bare feet.

It seems as though there is probably a story behind this photo. It would sure be interesting to know what it is.

  1. didn’t know that Grandma ever had time to sit in a relaxed place and read a newspaper! Wish we knew more about the “story behind the photo”!

    1. Definitely not what we normally think of Grandma doing. But in 1929, she no longer had a farm to worry about and most of the older kids (except maybe Aunt Ann) had left home. So I imagine living in a house in town with four or maybe five kids at home was pretty light duty for her. And if one of those five kids was Aunt Ann, she undoubtedly was more help than burden. So maybe in that period of her life she actually did get a chance to relax once in a while.

  2. You are right: there is probably a story behind this picture. Too bad we don’t know the story! Thank you for showing it!
