Mary Elizabeth McClain, c. 1921

This is a photo of Mary Elizabeth McClain (Nathan’s wife) standing by her house at 1008 S. Elm Street, where she lived from 1919 until her death in 1923.

This appears to be a photo of a photo. Either the original or the copy (or both) were extremely underexposed, making things very dark. Trying to bring an image out of that darkness yielded a very blotchy looking result, but at least you can see Mary reasonably well.

I won’t repeat what I wrote about Great-Grandma Mary in this previous post, other than to say she lived in this house from 1919 (after Great-Grandpa Nathan’s death) until her passing in 1923. Son Ray lived with her until he married in 1921. Daughter Clara also lived with her, probably until Mary passed away.

Mom’s/Florence’s one sentence description of her grandmother: “I remember her as a sweet, patient lady with a great sense of humor.”
