McClains and Bennetts, c. 1925

Here is another photo of McClain children with neighbors (using the term more loosely in this case). This one appears to have been taken in low light (toward sunset, evidently), so it isn’t a really sharp photo.

This photo was taken in front of the McClain house in Tallman about 1925. Names and ages (in 1925): In back, Florence McClain (L), 15, and Marjorie Bennett, 13. In front, from left, Marian Bennett, 11, Ruth Bennett, 7, Betty McClain, 8.

It looks like someone else was taking a photo at the same time—or at least was distracting the group from looking at the camera taking our photo. That is unfortunate, because we get only profiles of the Bennett girls. But at least we get some view of Mom’s and Aunt Betty’s faces.

The Bennetts lived in the north part of Lebanon, so not terribly far from Tallman. The father, James, was a school teacher in 1930, but had been a fruit farmer in Washington before they moved to Lebanon. The mother, Abbie, was a private nurse in Lebanon. Before Washington, they apparently lived in Idaho, because all their daughters were born there.

I don’t know how the Bennetts came in contacts with the McClains. I suppose it’s possible James Bennett was teaching at Tallman School, but that’s just a wild guess.
