John Perkins Wright, c. 1930

Here are two photos of Uncle John Perkins Wright. I believe Dad took these photos. Dad dedicated a page in his photo album to each of his siblings. Here is an image of the one for John:

On John’s page there are only these two photos. And unfortunately neither of them shows his face clearly. Dad’s notation indicates that these photos were taken in 1930 “or later.” So John was at least 15 years old here.

The first photo shows John holding a turtle. I don’t recognize the house in the background. If you do, I’d be grateful to know where this was.

The second photo shows John rowing a boat. He is looking at the camera and smiling, but the distance is just a bit too far to show facial features clearly. Again, I don’t know where this was taken. The natural assumption would be that this is on the Santiam near Jefferson.

I am struck by how good John looks in these photos in comparison to other photos of him. I speculate that this period around 1930 must have been the peak in his health, when he had recovered from rheumatic fever but before the decline that ultimately led to his death in 1935.

As has been mentioned before, John was remarkable for what he accomplished in his short life. Building an inboard motor boat from scratch was quite a feat.
