Clara Wright, 1937-1938

Here are three photos of Clara Wright, ranging in age from a month or two to more than a year. Unfortunately all of these photos have problems to varying degrees: out of focus, grainy, dirty, underexposed, excessively loved (touched too much)…

The above photo is probably the best of the three in terms of overall quality. Just a bit underexposed because it was taken in the shadow of the house. This is Clara at a few months old in a rocking chair. The location is (I think) in the yard of 130 N Sherman, looking across Sherman Street in the background.

Although surely not intended, the above was originally a nice sharp photo of a car and trees in the background, with an extremely blurry something in the foreground. The blurry something in the foreground is, of course, Clara, now a few months older than in the first photo. The background in this image is actually less sharp than it was in the original photo because of the processing done to try to get a little bit of clarity out of the the blurry Clara.

I’m not sure where this was taken. The background looks a little like some photos taken in the yard of 406 N Geary. That house was nowhere near finished when Clara was this age, but the photo could have been taken while the house was under construction.

The above would have been a lovely photo of a cute Clara if it hadn’t been so underexposed (dark). Lightening it up also brought out all the smudged fingerprints around the perimeter. Or possibly it was drawn on with crayon at some point and an attempt to clean off the crayon marks caused the smudging around the edges. You can see what may have been a heart drawn with crayon in the upper right corner, for instance.

1938 was a year of transition, when the Wright family moved from 130 N Sherman to the newly constructed house at 406 N Geary. Depending on when this photo was taken, the location could be either place. Maybe someone can tell which it was. (Not that it matters, really, since almost none of the interior is visible.)
