Florence McClain & Mary Rundback, 1933

Mom (Florence McClain) and her cousin Mary McClain were born the same year (1910) and were married the same year (1933—Mary, to Carl Rundback in April, and Mom, to Lloyd Wright in July).

There is clearly a ring on Mary’s left hand. The photo isn’t clear enough to determine exactly what sort of ring it is. Engagement, at least, but I’m thinking wedding also. My theory is that this photo was taken sometime after Mary’s wedding, but before Mom’s—so between April and July 1933. It would help if we could see Mom’s left hand. All we can say with certainty is that the photo was taken after Mary was engaged. I don’t know when that was, but I imagine it was only months before her marriage—probably still 1933, even.

It would be interesting to know how much time these two cousins actually got to spend together over the years before this. There was, of course, the tea party on an apple box in North Albany almost 20 years earlier. But overall, probably not that much time, with Mary in Nebraska and Mom in Oregon. Nevertheless, they seem to have been quite close, as is evident here.

This photo was taken in front of the McClain residence in Tallman. Taking photos in front of the bush behind Mom and Mary seems to have been something of a tradition in these years. You may have noticed it in the background of other photos.

Whatever else there is to say about this photo, it is a cute one of two happy cousins.
