I just happened upon this much more recent photo of Floyd (“Uncle Jack”) and Verna Hammel while looking for a photo of something else. Since we had just been discussing them, I thought I would go ahead and post it even though it is way outside the time period I had been working on.

Judging from the photos around it in the album, it must have been taken about 1980 (so Uncle Jack was about 90). I presume they are in the high-rise apartment in Portland that you all were referring to.
He looks every bit the “character” some of you mentioned. ;–) It’s too bad Aunt Verna wasn’t looking at the camera, but it looks like she was laughing at some comment Uncle Jack had just made.
I just noticed this is the 200th post to this humble “photo of the day” blog. On the one hand, I’m “chuffed” (as the Brits say) to have reached such a milestone. On the other, I look at the mounds of old photos (never mind more recent ones) yet to be posted and realize I’ll have to pick up the pace if there is any hope of finishing in our collective lifetime. In any event, thank you for reading and for your many encouraging comments thus far.
Thanks for posting this picture, Lloyd. It was good to be reminded of U. Jack as I remember him and A. Verna!
It’s good to see a more recent picture!
Congratulations on 200! I hope they go on for a long time!
That is a great picture of Uncle Jack; it captures his personality. Thank you!
I don’t know if it would be appropriate here, but I have a sweet memory of Uncle Jack. We were visiting him and I remember him taking little pieces of napkin and licking them to make them stick to his fingers. Then (and I remember the twinkle in his eyes as he did this) he said, “Here is Jack (one piece of napkin on one finger) and here is Jill (a different piece of napkin on a different finger). Fly away Jack (the finger moved into the air and behind his back) and fly away Jill (same action with the different finger).” I thought he was so funny!
Entirely appropriate! Thanks, Annie.
