Betty McClain on a Horse, c. 1932

I don’t know the circumstances behind this photo. This is Betty McClain, on a horse, bareback, in a dress (at least it looks like it to me).

I guess if someone in the McClain family were going to do this (ride a horse bareback in a dress), Aunt Betty would be the likely candidate. ;–)

This was taken on the McClain farm in Tallman. I’m guessing early 1930s, maybe 1932.

In 1932 (just as a reference point) Aunt Betty turned 15. So adjust the year according to how much older or younger you think she is than 15. Another reference point in the photo is barely visible to the left of the horse’s rump. I think that is probably Billy Hutchins. In 1932 he would have turned 10, so adjust for how old you think he is, too.

It is a cute photo of Aunt Betty. That much is certain.

  1. Girl after my own heart!,
Not important but isn’t the lattice in the background the same as in Mom and Dad’s wedding picture?

    1. Funny you bring the lattice up. I almost said something about it in my post, but then changed my mind. I imagine it must be the same lattice that is in the wedding pictures. I don’t know whether the lattice was installed specifically for the wedding or whether it was there before. If it was specifically put in for the wedding, this photo must have been taken in 1933 during the wedding preparations. But I just don’t know enough about the history of the lattice to use that as a chronological reference.

  2. Yes! I can hear her giggling! Truly, if someone in the McClain family (female) were to ride a horse bareback in a dress, it would be Aunt Betty!!
