This is kind of a replay of the photo in yesterday’s post, but seven years later. Here is Sarah Hammell with Sarah Elizabeth “Betty” McClain. Betty is about the same age Florence was in yesterday’s photo.

Great-Grandma Hammell is a little grayer, but overall she looks about the same as seven years earlier. She would have been about 57 in this photo.
The big change is in style. Where in yesterday’s photo there were just a few hints of a transition away from Victorian style, in this photo we see that transition is completed. Gone are dark clothes, gone is the watch on the chest, gone is the serious look, replaced with a hint of a smile. Even Aunt Betty’s dress is simpler than the lace Mom was wearing. The studio backdrop has changed, too, from a floral pattern to a “homier” look with curtains and a hint of a window.
Some things haven’t changed. There appears to be a bit of limbal ring enhancement still, and Aunt Betty’s mouth has definitely been blackened.
I think this has been mentioned before, but it is striking how little Aunt Betty’s face changed from two years old to adulthood. She is instantly recognizable even to someone who knew her only as an adult. The same face, just smaller with a bit pudgier cheeks.
You are correct: Aunt Betty’s face didn’t really change a lot as she grew up. This is a great picture. Thank you for pointing out the changes in fashion in the intervening 7 years: very interesting!
