Sarah Hammell & Florence McClain, c. 1912

This studio portrait appears to have been taken during the same session as the portrait of Mom with Aunt Bessie, posted earlier. As with the other photo, Mom’s mouth is not blacked out, but there appears to be some slight limbal ring enhancement on both subjects.

In 1912, Great-Grandma Hammell would have turned 50.

Possibly she made the dress Mom is wearing, and likely her own dress as well. Her dress is interesting because it seems transitional between Victorian style and Georgian. It isn’t black (though still dark colored), and it has what appears to be a colorful trim around the neck and sleeves. But there is still the pocket watch that was almost universal in Victorian era portraits of women (always worn over the heart, it seems–I don’t know whether there was some significance to that).

A nice portrait of Mom and her grandmother, in any case.
