Betty McClain, c. 1924

The next page of Mom’s photo album is dedicated to her sister Betty (Sarah Elizabeth). I don’t have any way to date these photos, except by Aunt Betty’s apparent age in them. I’m guessing they were taken in 1923 or 1924, when Aunt Betty was six or seven years old.

As far as I know, the people on the left (foreground and background) are just innocent bystanders. (But check out the swimming cap of the lady in back.) It would be interesting to know where this was taken.
This looks like Aunt Betty could have been a flower girl in a wedding, but I don’t know whose it would have been.

  1. In the last picture that is the same look she had all her life! Also, her bangs are so straight! Very impressive!

  2. I agree with Dorothy’s observation! I just ventured onto the timeline and the five-generation circle chart! I am so impressed with all the work you have done to uncover family history! Thank you so much!

    1. That was a flower girl dress. It was in our “collection” for years. It was a peach color in organdy. I think it was for Florence & Lloyd’s wedding.

      1. I don’t think it was Mom and Dad’s wedding. I think she was 16 ish when they got married, if I remember correctly. Cute picture and cute dress though.

        1. That is correct, Dorothy. Aunt Betty was born in 1917 and Mom and Dad were married in 1933, so she was over 16 when they were married.

Just based on timing, it’s possible she was a flower girl at Uncle Ray and Aunt Grace’s wedding in December 1921. She would have been four-going-on-five at that time, which seems like it’s in the ballpark. I don’t know where that wedding was held, but it would have been in the Albany area somewhere, I imagine, since that is where they settled. Grace’s parents lived in Summit.
