Florence McClain on a Horse, c. 1923

This will be the last photo from the “Pictures” sheet of paper tucked into the front of Mom’s photo album. There are two more photos on the sheet besides this one. One is a copy of a photo that was posted some time ago. The other is a copy of a photo that is also inside the album (and that one is in better condition), so that one will be posted as we go through the album itself.

There is no indication of Mom’s age in the photo below or of the year it was taken. My guess is that she is about 15 years old. An advisor thinks she is closer to 13. You can decide for yourself.

Two big surprises for me in this photo. One, I didn’t know Mom ever had even a casual interest in riding a horse. (Admittedly this is pretty casual, with no bit and bridle.) She does seem to be enjoying herself.

Second, I didn’t realize Mom ever in her life had hair this long. It is possible that her hair was this long in other photos from this time frame, but it wasn’t obvious because her hair was behind her back. This photo makes it clear.

I presume this photo was taken on the McClain farm in Tallman. That appears to be Grandpa McClain in the background on the right edge of the photo.

  1. I agree with your “advisor “ and would say even younger than 13! But also agree with the hair length and her ever riding a horse for pleasure. Sure wish I could ask her about it!
These never-before- seen pictures have been very interesting!

  2. I agree with everything Dorothy said! Every word!
Also, yes, Lloyd, I would agree that that looks like Grandpa McClain at the edge of the photo.

  3. It is hard for me to even imagine Mom getting on a horse. She must have been more adventuresome at that age than I imagined! I love the thought. She deeply loved her father and probably cherished this connection with him! Thanks again, Lloyd. It is so amazing to see Mom as a “person” when she was young! Love it!!

  4. OK, based on your feedback (thank you) I have revised the date in the title of this post to 1923. I won’t bother with revising the text of the post, though.
