Lloyd Wright, Barney McClain and friends, 1932

Little change of pace today. Two photos, taken on the same day trip. (I believe I was told it was from Tallman to Helmick State Park between Corvallis and Monmouth.) Taken about June 1932.

I refer to this first photo as “Dad with his Harem.” From left, Esther Turnidge (later Aunt Esther McClain), Mom (Florence McClain), Dad (Lloyd Wright), a friend of Betty’s (I believe I was told her name was Marian Morris), and Betty McClain (later Aunt Betty Scott). I believe (Uncle) Barney McClain took this photo. I note that Esther is holding a camera, whether hers or someone else’s.

Florence and Lloyd would later marry (9 Jul 1933), as most of you know. Likewise Esther and Barney (4 May 1935).

This is not the only group picture where everyone is looking at the camera except Dad. (Same thing in the picture of the siblings taken at the house on Goltra Road.) I don’t know whether this was a cool thing to do at the time or Dad just had a habit of not paying attention to the photographer.

I’m guessing the couples (Barney/Esther and Lloyd/Florence) would have preferred that this be a double date, but pesky little sister Betty agitated to come along and bring a friend. I don’t remember for sure, but Aunt Betty might even have intimated as much to me.

This second photo was taken on the same day trip, and probably at the same location. It would be interesting to know what Dad was taking a photo of while standing on the trunk (yes, real “trunk”) of the car. I don’t know whether Uncle Barney was just goofing around for the camera, or whether Dad actually needed to be steadied while taking that photo.
