Marriage of Edwin Wright & Helen Jongewaard, February 18, 1938

Here are a couple of photos from the wedding of (Uncle) Edwin Wright and (Aunt) Helen Jongewaard. They were married on the evening of February 18, 1932 1938 at the home Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Adams in Salem (friends of Aunt Helen, I assume). Aunt Helen was living in Salem before her marriage to Uncle Ed.

I’m going to guess that the person on the left is Melba Jongewaard, Aunt Helen’s sister, and the person behind the table is Mary Jane Adams (who I presume is the daughter of the O. D. Adams). (According to the Statesman-Journal, the other person who assisted with the reception was Mrs. Leland Wendt, aunt of the bride. So possibly one of these people is her.) On the right, of course, is Uncle Ed and Aunt Helen, about to cut the cake.

I have to say Aunt Helen looks lovely (I hesitate to use the word “cute”) and so happy. Not to take anything away from that, but in my experience, she was always a pretty bubbly person. She was four days shy of her 20th birthday, if I have correct dates.

Aunt Helen was born in South Dakota and had moved to Oregon quite recently when she met Uncle Ed. In that time since she moved to Oregon, though, she had been busy. She attended Capital Business College in Salem, then got a job with the state board of vocational education (at least that is the job she had at the time of the wedding).

Her parents were still living in South Dakota when she was married, and apparently they were unable to attend the wedding. She was given away by her uncle Leland Wendt (her mother’s brother).

As mentioned in this previous post that gave a brief synopsis of Uncle Ed’s life, he was an Albany fireman from about the time he married Aunt Helen until they moved to Damascus, Oregon in 1943 and he took up growing filberts (hazelnuts). He would turn 30 the August after the wedding.
