Marriage of Edwin Wright & Helen Jongewaard, February 18, 1938

Here are a couple of photos from the wedding of (Uncle) Edwin Wright and (Aunt) Helen Jongewaard. They were married on the evening of February 18, 1932 1938 at the home Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Adams in Salem (friends of Aunt Helen, I assume). Aunt Helen was living in Salem before her marriage to Uncle Ed.

June Gaines (maid of honor), Helen Jongewaard (Wright), W. Edwin Wright, Harold Wright (best man). (This photo had a serious problem with vertical alignment. Please pardon the triangles of fill along the left edge and in the lower right corner.)
I’m going to guess that the person on the left is Melba Jongewaard, Aunt Helen’s sister, and the person behind the table is Mary Jane Adams (who I presume is the daughter of the O. D. Adams). (According to the Statesman-Journal, the other person who assisted with the reception was Mrs. Leland Wendt, aunt of the bride. So possibly one of these people is her.) On the right, of course, is Uncle Ed and Aunt Helen, about to cut the cake.

I have to say Aunt Helen looks lovely (I hesitate to use the word “cute”) and so happy. Not to take anything away from that, but in my experience, she was always a pretty bubbly person. She was four days shy of her 20th birthday, if I have correct dates.

Aunt Helen was born in South Dakota and had moved to Oregon quite recently when she met Uncle Ed. In that time since she moved to Oregon, though, she had been busy. She attended Capital Business College in Salem, then got a job with the state board of vocational education (at least that is the job she had at the time of the wedding).

Her parents were still living in South Dakota when she was married, and apparently they were unable to attend the wedding. She was given away by her uncle Leland Wendt (her mother’s brother).

As mentioned in this previous post that gave a brief synopsis of Uncle Ed’s life, he was an Albany fireman from about the time he married Aunt Helen until they moved to Damascus, Oregon in 1943 and he took up growing filberts (hazelnuts). He would turn 30 the August after the wedding.

  1. I will use the word “cute”…as she really looks cute and radiant. She was a very special aunt! A very HARD worker and great cook!! She seemed unflappable!!

  2. I didn’t realize that Uncle Ed was 10 years older than Aunt Helen. Yes, Aunt Helen looks lovely, and yes, she was always bubbly.

  3. Mom and Dad were actually married in 1938. Mom was living with the Adams at the time. They were next door neighbors to her Uncle Leland.
She met Dad at the state fair. She was working there for a state department, I believe Dept of Agriculture

    1. Thanks, Neal. Sorry for the typo in the date. I knew it was 1938, and had it correct in the title. Thanks, too, for the additional information.

Was the presence of the Leland Wendts the reason your mom moved to Salem in the first place?

Also, would I be correct in thinking you were named after your mom’s father, Cornelius Jongewaard, who apparently went by “Neal”?

      Thanks again.

  4. Not to be a nit picker but the date in the second sentence doesn’t jive with the date in the title. I like how Aunt Helen is holding the hands of both of the people next to her. She outshines everyone in the party!

    1. Not nit-picking at all. Thanks for calling my attention to the typo, BB. The correct date is 1938. I don’t know where my fingers got the “2” in the body of the post. Post corrected.
