Addie & Arthur McClain’s First Wedding Anniversary, June 1909

Grandma Addie and Grandpa Arthur posed for this photo on their first wedding anniversary, June 3, 1909.

The photo was taken by John Hammell in front of the McClain home at 1027 E Seventh, Albany. Grandma is wearing her wedding dress. They seem to be wearing the same hats they were wearing in their bicycling photo in this post. If you wish to refer back to it, their wedding photo appeared in this post.

On the back of the above photo, Grandma has written a note to an unidentified person which explains more about the circumstances:

I’ll transcribe in case you can’t make out all the writing…

Papa took these with his camera. This is the way we looked when we were married one year. It is my wedding dress. My glasses blurred you see. It is taken in the front of our own home. We are on our way to church.

The reference to “these” possibly implies that John took other photos on this occasion, or that he took other unrelated photos that Addie was sending along with this one. Whatever the case, I don’t know what those photos may have been or whether they still exist in the archives. Possibly they have appeared in previous posts and we didn’t know the connection to this photo.

It is a nice photo for their first anniversary. The reflection in Grandma’s glasses looks anachronistically very 1960s. ;–)

  1. They would be shocked at the way people dress for going to church these days! They look so well dressed and proper!!

  2. Grandma used her wedding dress subsequently to getting married: smart lady! I agree with you, Judy: it is a heart-warming picture!
