Florence McClain and John Hammel, Fall 1911

I’m guessing this photo was taken in the late summer or early fall after Florence McClain’s first birthday—so when she was fifteen months old or so. She is with her grandfather, John Hammel on the porch of the McClain residence at 1027 E. Seventh Street in Albany. Florence was John and wife Sarah’s first grandchild.

The hat or bonnet (I’m not sure) Florence is wearing is interesting. I wonder if it has some particular significance. I can’t quite make out what the things that seem to be dangling on the sides are. Bows perhaps? The bonnet and coat look like they were made as a set, perhaps by her grandmother Sarah (?).

Her grandfather looks dapper, as usual.

  1. Very cute picture! G-Grandpa Hammell was obviously proud of his first grandchild! I can’t tell what the things on the side of the hat are, either. Also can’t say whether the coat and hat set was made by G-Grandma Hammell or Grandma McClain; I know Grandma M was very good at that sort of thing.

  2. Another picture I have never seen! So precious the way she has her hand on his shoulder! My 2c worth….matching coat and hat with fancy roses os the side of the hat!
